Types of Sportsbook Bonuses — Free Bets, Deposit Match, and More

There are four main types of sportsbook bonuses: bonus bets (free bets), first-bet insurance, deposit matches, and reload offers. They all sound like free money, but each works differently — and the differences matter a lot when you're deciding where to sign up.

What Is a Bonus Bet (Free Bet)?

A bonus bet is a wager funded by the sportsbook. If it wins, you keep only the profit — the stake is not returned. A $50 bonus bet winning at -110 returns roughly $45, not $95. That surprises a lot of new bettors. I've watched people walk away thinking they cleared a big reward, only to realize they got about half what they expected.

Bonus bets typically expire within 7–14 days if unused. Use them or lose them.

What Is First-Bet Insurance?

First-bet insurance (sometimes called a risk-free bet) refunds your first wager as bonus bets — not cash — if it loses, up to a stated cap. BetMGM's offer, for example, covers up to $1,500 in bonus bets if your first qualifying bet loses. The refund lands as bonus bets, not spendable cash, so the same "stake not returned on a win" rule applies when you use them. See the full breakdown in our BetMGM bonus code review.

What Is a Deposit Match?

A deposit match credits you a percentage of your deposit as bonus funds — say, 100% up to $500. This type is common in casino promos but appears at some sportsbooks too. The catch is rollover: you usually must wager the deposit plus the bonus several times over before withdrawing. A $150 combined deposit-plus-bonus amount at 5× rollover means $750 in total wagers before you touch your money. Our page on sportsbook rollover requirements walks through this math in detail.

What Is a Reload Bonus?

A reload bonus targets existing customers on a second or later deposit. Dollar amounts are typically smaller than welcome offers, but they keep value flowing after the sign-up period. DraftKings, for instance, layers ongoing profit boost packs and a VIP program on top of its welcome deal — more on that at our ongoing sportsbook promotions page.

How Do These Bonus Types Compare?

Bonus Type How It's Triggered Paid As Stake Returned on Win? Typical Rollover
Bonus Bet / Free Bet Sign-up or promo opt-in Bonus bet credits No One-time use; profit only
First-Bet Insurance First qualifying bet loses Bonus bets No (stake is the refund) Varies; often single-use
Deposit Match Qualifying deposit Bonus funds Yes (on real-money portion) Often 5× or higher
Reload Bonus Subsequent deposit Bonus funds or bonus bets Depends on offer Varies by operator

What About FanCash — Is That a Real Bonus?

Fanatics Sportsbook structures its welcome offer as 10 × $100 in FanCash. FanCash is an internal reward currency — it cannot be withdrawn as real money, and bonus bets converted from it are also not cashable. That's a meaningful distinction from a cash deposit match. Full details are in our Fanatics Sportsbook welcome offer review.

Red Flags to Watch Before You Claim Any Bonus

  • Odds restrictions: many bonuses only count wagers at -200 or better toward rollover — parlays and heavy favorites may be excluded.
  • Payment method exclusions: depositing via PayPal, Skrill, or a prepaid card can disqualify you from the bonus entirely. Check our guide on which payment methods qualify for sportsbook bonuses before you fund your account.
  • Short expiry: bonus bets usually expire in 7–14 days; rollover deadlines exist too.
  • Tax liability: winnings from bonus bets are taxable income under IRS rules, the same as cash wagers. Our sportsbook bonus taxes page explains what to expect come January.

Which Bonus Type Is Best for New Bettors?

For most casual bettors, first-bet insurance is the most forgiving structure — one clean trigger, one refund if you lose, and no complex rollover ladder to climb. Deposit matches offer bigger headline numbers but harder clearing conditions. Bonus bets are simple but worth less than their face value because the stake never comes back.
